Carpenters: Standing Up to the Test of Time
I wish I hadn’t waited so long to listen to the Carpenters again
I recently stumbled on a reaction video on YouTube where two young listeners were watching a video from the 1970s group Carpenters. I quit scrolling and commenced to watch it.
The video was intriguing as the reviewers were so young and had never heard or seen the Carpenters at all. That is part of the charm of these videos. Young people are listening to older music with a new perspective and with fresh ears and eyes. And with artists that were pre-autotune.
This particular video was featuring one of Carpenter’s biggest hits, “We’ve Only Just Begun.” I was about thirteen when the song came out and I had heard it many times. I actually bought the vinyl album “Close to You” when it came out so I know many of their songs well. I remember the local roller rink always played the title song and their first hit, the super appropriate “Close to You” as the couples’ song.
I hadn’t heard this song in many years and being a Carpenters’ fan early in my life, I was thrilled to see the positive reactions from the husband and wife duo. I watched several others of these types of reaction videos. After awhile, you get a sense of who is real and who is faking the reactions. Some of the more amusing comments…
